Plus 3 is three more.

A pair that makes 10 is a fact.

Read it: Count on or count back

7 + 3: start at 7 and count on 3: 8, 9, 10. 10 − 3: start at 10 and count back 3: 9, 8, 7.

  1. Start at the bigger number.
  2. Count on 1, 2 or 3 to add. Count back to take away.
  3. The last number you say is the answer.

Starting at 7 saves you counting all the way up from 1 again.

Each hop is 1 more, so 3 hops from 7 land on 10.

To take away, start at the big number and count back instead.

Start at the big number. Count on to add, count back to take away.

Saying 7 as the first count, and landing on 9.

7 is where you start. The first hop says 8: 8, 9, 10.

3 + 3 = ___ — 6. Start at 3. Count on 3: 4, 5, 6.

5 + 3

Let's add three to a number. Imagine you have five stickers, and a friend gives you three more. How many do you have now?

We can write this as five plus three. Let's find the answer using a number line.

Start at five. That's our first number. Put a dot on the five.

Now we count on three more. We'll hop one, two, three to the right.

Hop one. Five plus one is six.

Hop two. Six plus one is seven.

Hop three. Seven plus one is eight!

Grade 1 · Count on 3 to add

We landed on eight. That's our answer.

Five plus three is eight. When you add three, just count on three more. Great job!
