Plus 1 is the next number.

You do not need to count all.

Read it: Count on or count back

7 + 3: start at 7 and count on 3: 8, 9, 10. 10 − 3: start at 10 and count back 3: 9, 8, 7.

  1. Start at the bigger number.
  2. Count on 1, 2 or 3 to add. Count back to take away.
  3. The last number you say is the answer.

Starting at 7 saves you counting all the way up from 1 again.

Each hop is 1 more, so 3 hops from 7 land on 10.

To take away, start at the big number and count back instead.

Start at the big number. Count on to add, count back to take away.

Saying 7 as the first count, and landing on 9.

7 is where you start. The first hop says 8: 8, 9, 10.

3 + 1 = ___ — 4. Start at 3. Count on 1: 4.

7 + 1

You have 7 stickers. Your friend gives you 1 more. How many do you have now?

We can write this as 7 plus 1.

Let's use a number line to help us see.

We start at 7.

Adding 1 means we hop just one step to the very next number.

Grade 1 · Adding 1 means the very next number

We land on 8!

Plus one always means the next number when we count.

So 7 plus 1 is 8. You have 8 stickers. Nice work!

What you see

While they climb, your page writes one true line to ask about tonight, and a short note each Sunday.
