An equation is true when both sides match.

False means the two sides differ.

Read it: True or false?

Is 5 + 4 = 6 + 3 true? Work out each side: 5 + 4 = 9, and 6 + 3 = 9. Both sides make 9, so it is true.

  1. Work out the left side.
  2. Work out the right side.
  3. The same number on both sides is true. Different numbers is false.

The = sign means both sides are the same amount.

A balance stays level only when both sides weigh the same.

An equation can start with one number, like 8 = 3 + 4.

Work out both sides. True means they make the same number.

Calling 8 = 3 + 4 true because a sum comes after the = sign.

Work out 3 + 4: it is 7, not 8. So 8 = 3 + 4 is false.

Is 16 − 2 = 15 true or false? — false. 16 − 2 = 14, not 15, so it is false.

3 + 4 = 5 + 2

Let's find out if this equation is true or false. An equation is true when both sides are equal.

Here's our equation: three plus four equals five plus two. Is that true?

Think of the equal sign like a balance. Both sides have to weigh the same.

Let's look at the left side first. What is three plus four?

Three plus four is seven. Let's write that below.

Now the right side. What is five plus two?

Five plus two is also seven. Write that below too.

Both sides equal seven. Seven equals seven!

Grade 1 · Is the equation true or false?

So the equation is true. Great job checking both sides!
