Read the clock. What time is it?

Your answer:

How it is taught

0:00 of 3:57

The short hand names the hour.

The long hand counts minutes past that hour.

Read it: Fives, then ones

4:37: count by fives to the 7, that is 35. Then count on 2 more by ones: 37.

  1. Find the last numeral the long hand passed: the 7.
  2. Count by fives to it: 5, 10, 15, 20, 25, 30, 35.
  3. Count on by ones to the long hand: 36, 37. The short hand has passed 4, so it is 4:37.

Each numeral is 5 minutes along from the one before, so the 7 is 35 minutes past the hour.

The long hand stopped 2 minutes past the 7, and those last minutes are counted by ones.

Fives get you close fast; ones finish the count exactly.

Count by fives to the last numeral the long hand passed, then count on by ones.

Reading the 7 as 7 minutes and writing 4:07.

The 7 means 35 minutes. 2 more by ones makes 37: 4:37.

The short hand has passed 6. The long hand has passed the 4 by 3 minutes. What time is it? — 6:23. The 4 is 20 minutes, and 3 more is 23: 6:23.

Reading 7:23 on a clock

What time does this clock show? Let's read it together — to the exact minute.

Grade 3 · Reading an analog clock minute by minute

First, look at the short hand. It's the hour hand, and it sits between the seven and the eight.

Since it hasn't reached the eight yet, the hour is seven.

We'll write a seven for the hour, then a colon — minutes come next.

Now the long hand — the minute hand. It tells us how many minutes past seven.

Count by fives around the clock: five, ten, fifteen, twenty.

Then count single minutes past the four: twenty-one, twenty-two, twenty-three.

That's twenty-three minutes past seven. Write twenty-three after the colon.

The clock shows seven twenty-three. Great job reading time to the minute!

Now you try. Read this clock to the exact minute. What time is on it?

What you see

While they climb, your page writes one true line to ask about tonight, and a short note each Sunday.
