Ben's candle is 17 cm tall. After an evening it has melted 9 cm. How tall is the candle now?

A cut takes length away.

Remaining length is what is left.

Both lengths must use the same units.

Read it: Lengths as jumps

A ribbon is 25 cm long. Kim adds 12 cm more. Start at 25 on the line and jump on 12: it lands on 37 cm.

  1. Find the first length on the line: start there.
  2. Jump on to add a length, or jump back to take one away.
  3. Read where the jump lands: 25 + 12 = 37 cm.

A number line is like a long ruler, so a length is a place on it.

Adding a length moves you on, and cutting one off moves you back.

The jump is the length you added, so where it lands is the new length.

Start at the first length, jump on to add or back to take away, and read where you land.

Starting at 0 instead of at 25, and landing on 12.

The ribbon is already 25 cm long. Start at 25, then jump on 12.

A rope is 46 m long. 18 m is cut off. How many meters are left? — 28. 46 − 18 = 28 m.

Green ribbon 42 cm − Yellow ribbon 25 cm

Maya has a green ribbon that is forty-two centimeters long. Her yellow ribbon is twenty-five centimeters long. How much longer is the green one?

Let's mark both lengths on a number line. Yellow stops at twenty-five. Green stretches all the way to forty-two.

The gap between them is the difference — that's what we want to find.

To find the difference we subtract: forty-two minus twenty-five.

Start with the ones place. Can we take five away from two?

Two is too small, so we borrow one ten. Four tens becomes three, and two ones becomes twelve.

Now twelve minus five is seven. Write seven in the ones place.

In the tens, three minus two is one. Write one in the tens place.

Forty-two minus twenty-five is seventeen. The green ribbon is seventeen centimeters longer than the yellow one!
