Subtract 1, 2, or 3 means count back.

Each hop back is one less.

Read it: Count on or count back

7 + 3: start at 7 and count on 3: 8, 9, 10. 10 − 3: start at 10 and count back 3: 9, 8, 7.

  1. Start at the bigger number.
  2. Count on 1, 2 or 3 to add. Count back to take away.
  3. The last number you say is the answer.

Starting at 7 saves you counting all the way up from 1 again.

Each hop is 1 more, so 3 hops from 7 land on 10.

To take away, start at the big number and count back instead.

Start at the big number. Count on to add, count back to take away.

Saying 7 as the first count, and landing on 9.

7 is where you start. The first hop says 8: 8, 9, 10.

6 − 2 = ___ — 4. Start at 6. Count back 2: 5, 4.

9 − 2

You have nine stickers. You give two away. How many do you have left?

We can write this as nine minus two equals — what?

Let's use a number line to count back.

Start at nine, because we begin with nine stickers.

Count back one: nine… eight.

Grade 1 · Count back to subtract

Count back one more: eight… seven.

We landed on seven.

So nine minus two is seven. When you subtract one, two, or three, just count back. Great job!
