12 rungs. A star at the top.

A class starts at 7:00 and lasts 10 minutes. What time does it end? Write the time as h:mm.

How it is taught

0:00 of 3:49

A time interval is the gap between two times.

Duration is that gap, counted in minutes.

Read it: Count minutes by fives

The clock starts at 10:40. Later it reads five past eleven. Count by fives around the top to see how long that took.

  1. Start at the first minute hand: 10:40.
  2. Jump five minutes at each number until you reach five past eleven.
  3. Five jumps of five: 25 minutes have passed.

Counting every little mark from 10:40 to five past eleven works, but you lose track as the hand crosses twelve.

Each numbered tick is five minutes, so you only count the jumps, not every tiny mark.

Crossing twelve does not start the wait over; you keep adding the five-minute jumps after the hour changes.

Count by fives around the clock from the start time to the end time.

Counting 10:40 to five past eleven as fifteen minutes, because five looks close to forty.

Jump five minutes at each number past the twelve. Five jumps make 25 minutes.

A movie starts at 2:00 and ends at 3:30. How long is the movie? — 1 hour 30 minutes. From two to three is one hour, then thirty more minutes to reach the end.

3:45 to 4:20 — how long?

Sam's soccer practice started at 3:45 and ended at 4:20. How long was practice?

Let's draw a number line of minutes to help us count.

Practice started at 3:45 and ended at 4:20. We need to find the gap between them.

First, let's hop to a friendly time. From 3:45, it takes fifteen minutes to reach 4:00.

From 4:00, we jump twenty more minutes to reach 4:20.

Now we add our two jumps: fifteen plus twenty.

Grade 3 · Finding how long soccer practice lasted

Fifteen plus twenty is thirty-five. Practice was thirty-five minutes long!
