Tom has 325 cents, earns 142 more cents, then spends 50 cents on a sticker. Which plan finds how many cents he has now?

Money is dollars and cents that must line up.

100 cents make 1 dollar.

Read it: Count up to find the change

A toy costs $4.75 and you pay with $10. Count up: $4.75 to $5 is $0.25, then $5 to $10 is $5. The change is $5.25.

  1. Start at the price on the line.
  2. Hop to the next whole dollar, then on to what was paid.
  3. Add the hops: that is the change.

Counting up is how change is made: from the price to the money paid.

Hopping to a whole dollar first keeps every hop easy to add.

Money left after spending is the same line counted down.

Count up from the price to what was paid, and add the hops.

Getting $5.75 by taking the cents the wrong way.

$4.75 to $5 is only $0.25. Then $5 more to $10, so the change is $5.25.

A book costs $7.60. Jo pays with a $10 bill. How much change does Jo get? — $2.40. Count up: $7.60 to $8 is $0.40, then $8 to $10 is $2. $0.40 + $2 = $2.40.

$7.00 − ($4.50 + $1.20)

Liam has seven dollars. He buys a comic for four dollars and fifty cents, and stickers for one dollar and twenty cents. How much money is left?

First, let's add up what Liam spent. We line up the decimal points so cents sit under cents.

Start on the right with the cents. Zero plus zero is zero.

Next, the dimes column. Five plus two is seven.

Now the dollars. Four plus one is five. Liam spent five dollars and seventy cents.

Now we subtract that from the seven dollars he started with. Line the decimal points up again.

Cents column first. Zero minus zero is zero.

We can't take seven dimes from zero dimes, so we borrow one dollar. The seven becomes six, and the dimes column becomes ten.

Now ten minus seven is three.

And six minus five is one dollar.
