Round Multi-Digit Whole Numbers to Any Place

Students use place value understanding to round whole numbers up to 1,000,000 to any specified place (ones, tens, hundreds, thousands, ten-thousands, hundred-thousands). They identify which two multiples the number falls between, determine the midpoint, and apply rounding rules.

Rounding swaps a number for a nearby labelled place.

Look at the digit just to the right of that place.

Read it: Find the middle, then round

Is 2290 nearer 2200 or 2300? The middle of the line is 2250, and 2290 is past it, so 2290 rounds to 2300.

  1. Find the hundreds the number sits between: 2200 and 2300.
  2. Find the middle mark between them: 2250, 50 past 2200.
  3. See which side of the middle the number is on, and round to that mark: 2300.

The line shows the answer: 2290 is only 10 short of 2300, so 2300 is the nearer hundred.

The middle is the only mark that decides: past it rounds up, and short of it rounds down.

The same picture works for any place: to round to the nearest ten thousand, the marks are 10,000 apart.

Find the marks either side and the middle between them; past the middle rounds up, short of it rounds down.

Rounding 2230 up to 2300 because rounding always seems to go up.

2230 is short of the middle at 2250, so it rounds down to 2200.

Round 370,000 to the nearest hundred thousand. — 400,000. 370,000 sits past the middle at 350,000, so it is nearer 400,000 than 300,000.

47,283 → nearest thousand

Let's round forty-seven thousand, two hundred eighty-three to the nearest thousand.

Here's our number: forty-seven thousand, two hundred eighty-three.

We're rounding to the thousands place — the digit there is a seven.

47,283 sits between forty-seven thousand and forty-eight thousand. Let's draw a number line.

The halfway mark is forty-seven thousand five hundred.

47,283 lands here — to the LEFT of the halfway mark.

There's a shortcut: peek at the digit just after the thousands. It's a two.
