Record Measurement Equivalents in a Two-Column Table

Students organize measurement conversions in a two-column table, listing equivalent measurements (e.g., 1 ft / 12 in, 2 ft / 24 in, 3 ft / 36 in). Students identify and extend patterns in the table and use the table to solve conversion problems.

Table: kilometers | meters. Fill the 2 kilometers row.

How many meters go with 2 kilometers?

A two-column table lists matching measurements.

Each row follows the same multiply rule.

Read it: Every row is the same times

1 foot is 12 inches, 2 feet are 24 inches and 3 feet are 36 inches. Every row of the table is times 12, so 4 feet are 4 × 12 = 48 inches.

  1. Find how many small units make 1 big unit: 1 foot is 12 inches.
  2. From the big unit to the small one there are more of them: multiply by 12.
  3. From the small unit to the big one there are fewer: 72 inches ÷ 12 = 6 feet.

A foot is longer than an inch, so it takes 12 inches to make the same length as 1 foot.

Each foot more adds 12 inches more, so every row of the table grows by 12.

The table works both ways: read down to multiply, and read up to divide.

Multiply by the factor to change to the smaller unit, and divide by it to change to the bigger unit.

Adding 12 instead of multiplying, and saying 4 feet are 16 inches.

Every foot is 12 inches, so 4 feet are 4 groups of 12: 48 inches.

3 yards = ___ feet — 9. Every yard is 3 feet, so 3 of them is 3 times 3: 9.

Feet → Inches table

Maya is measuring ribbons. She knows feet, but the directions use inches. Let's build a table to switch between them.

We'll make a two-column table. The left column is feet, the right column is inches.

Start with one foot. How many inches is that?

One foot equals twelve inches. Write twelve next to one.

Now two feet. Two groups of twelve inches…

…is twenty-four inches.

Three feet is three twelves, which is thirty-six inches.

Look at the pattern: every time we add one foot, the inches go up by twelve.

Grade 4 · Building a feet-to-inches conversion table

So how many inches is five feet?

Keep adding twelve: thirty-six, forty-eight, sixty. Five feet is sixty inches.

A two-column table makes conversions easy — and the pattern lets us reach numbers we never wrote down. Great work!
