Recognize and Generate Simple Equivalent Fractions

Students will recognize equivalent fraction pairs such as 1/2 = 2/4, 1/3 = 2/6, and 2/4 = 4/8, and will generate their own examples of equivalent fractions using visual models. They will explain why two fractions are equivalent by referring to the size of the parts or the position on a number line.

Equivalent fractions name the same amount.

Multiply top and bottom by the same number.

Read it: Same chocolate, new name

Maya has 1 piece of chocolate, half a bar. Leo cuts his half into 2 and says he got more. The bar shows 1/2 = 2/4.

  1. Maya has 1 piece out of 2: 1/2.
  2. Leo cut his half into 2, so 2 pieces out of 4: 2/4.
  3. Slide Leo's 2 pieces together. They match Maya's 1.

Cutting into more pieces changes the count, not how much chocolate there is.

1/2 and 2/4 name the same amount — more pieces, each smaller.

A whole cut into 4 has parts half the size of a whole cut into 2, so 2 of them make the same half.

Cut each piece the same way: more pieces, same chocolate, a new name.

Reading 2/4 as more than 1/2, because 2 is more than 1.

Fourths are smaller than halves. 2 of them make the same half.

4/4 = ___/8 — 8. 4/4 is 1 whole, and 1 whole is 8/8.

1/2 = 2/4

Today we'll see how two fractions can name the very same amount. Let's compare one half and two fourths.

Here's a bar split into two equal pieces. We shade one piece — that's one half.

We write it as one over two. The bottom tells us there are two equal pieces, the top tells us one is shaded.

Now watch — we split the SAME bar into four equal pieces instead of two.

Two of those four pieces are shaded. That's two fourths.

We write it as two over four. Four equal pieces in all, two of them shaded.

Look — the shaded part is exactly the same size. Same amount of bar, just cut differently.

Grade 3 · Same amount, different number of pieces

We can also show this on a number line from zero to one.

One half lands right in the middle.

Two fourths lands… right in the same spot! They're at the exact same point.

So one half equals two fourths. They're called equivalent fractions.

Two fractions are equivalent when they name the same amount. One half and two fourths are equal!
