Read and Write Multi-Digit Numbers in Multiple Forms

Students read and write whole numbers up to 1,000,000 using standard form (digits), word form (number names), and expanded form. They practice translating among all three representations and recognize that each form conveys the same quantity.

0 of 20

20 rungs. A star at the top.

Fill in the expanded form. 4572 = 4000 + 500 + + 2.

How it is taught

0:00 of 3:51

A number can be written with digits or with words.

Empty places need a zero so the digits stay put.

Read it: Every place gets a digit

4000 + 500 + 70 + 2: each part goes in its own place, 4 thousands, 5 hundreds, 7 tens and 2 ones, so the number is 4572.

  1. Put each part, or each period of the name, in its own place.
  2. Read the table from the left, one digit for each place.
  3. Where a place has nothing, write a 0 to hold it.

A digit's place tells its value: the 4 in 4572 is 4 thousands.

A number name says the thousands first, then the hundreds, tens and ones.

A 0 keeps every other digit in its place: four thousand sixty is 4060.

One digit for every place, from the left. A 0 holds an empty place.

Writing 46 for four thousand sixty, and dropping the zeros.

The hundreds and the ones are empty, so a 0 holds each: 4060.

five thousand twelve = ___ — 5012. Five thousand puts 5 in the thousands; twelve is 1 ten and 2 ones; a 0 holds the hundreds: 5012.

24,503 in standard, expanded, and word form

Numbers can be written in three different ways. Today we'll explore twenty-four thousand, five hundred three.

In standard form, we write the number using digits: two, four, five, zero, three.

Each digit sits in a place — ten-thousands, thousands, hundreds, tens, and ones.

The two is in the ten-thousands place, so it's worth twenty thousand.

The four is in the thousands place — that's four thousand.

The five is in the hundreds place, worth five hundred.

The zero is in the tens place. Zero tens means we can skip it in expanded form.

And the three sits in the ones place, worth just three.

Put them together: twenty thousand plus four thousand plus five hundred plus three.

In word form, we say it out loud: twenty-four thousand, five hundred three.

Same number, three forms — standard, expanded, and word. Nice work!
