Partition Shapes into Fourths and Describe Equal Shares

Students divide circles and rectangles into 4 equal shares and use the vocabulary: fourths, quarters, a fourth of, a quarter of. Students compare the size of shares when a whole is divided into different numbers of equal parts and describe the whole as made up of shares.

Fourths are four equal shares of one whole.

More fourths make a greater share.

Read it: Equal shares

Fair shares are all the same size. 2 equal shares are halves, 3 are thirds, 4 are fourths.

  1. Count the shares.
  2. Check that every share is the same size.
  3. Name them by how many: halves, thirds or fourths.

Shares that are not the same size are not fair, even when there are the right number.

The more equal shares a shape has, the smaller each share is.

Equal shares can look different and still be the same size.

Equal shares are the same size: 2 are halves, 3 are thirds, 4 are fourths.

Calling any 3 pieces thirds.

Thirds must be the same size. 3 pieces of different sizes are not thirds.

Leo cuts 4 tortillas into fourths. How many fourths in all? — 16. Each tortilla makes 4 fourths: 4, 8, 12, 16.

Sharing a brownie four ways

Today we'll split a shape into four equal shares. Imagine sharing one brownie with three friends!

Here is the whole brownie. One big piece — that's the whole.

First, we cut it down the middle. Now we have two equal pieces — halves.

Look — we cut each half in half again. That gives us four equal pieces.

Grade 2 · Equal shares: fourths and quarters

Let's count them: one, two, three, four. Four equal shares!

We call these fourths — or quarters. Both words mean the same thing.

Look at just one piece. This piece is a fourth of the whole brownie.

We can write a fourth as one over four — one out of four equal parts.

Put all four fourths together and we get the whole brownie back.

When a shape is split into four equal shares, each share is a fourth — also called a quarter!
