A take-away story needs subtract.

The difference is what is left.

Read it: Count on, count back

There are 38 bulbs. Then 24 more come. Start at 38 on the number line and count on 24: you land on 62.

  1. Find the number the story starts with, and start there.
  2. Count on if more come, and count back if some go.
  3. Read where you land: 38 + 24 = 62.

You already know the first number, so you do not count it again from 1.

Counting on adds the new ones, and counting back takes them away.

When you know the start and the end, count on between them to find the change.

Start at the first number, count on to add or count back to take away, and read where you land.

Starting at 0 and counting all 38 bulbs again.

The 38 are already there. Start at 38, then count on 24.

A shelf has 46 cans. A truck brings 29 more. How many cans now? — 75. Count on 29 from 46: 46 + 29 = 75.

47 − 23 = ?

Maya has forty-seven stickers in her album.

She gives twenty-three of them to her best friend.

How many stickers does Maya have left?

When we give some away, the total goes down. So we subtract.

Let's stack forty-seven on top and twenty-three underneath, lining up the ones and the tens.

Start with the ones column. What is seven minus three?

Four! Write four in the ones place.

Now the tens column. What is four minus two?

Two! Write two in the tens place.
