This window shape has 3 straight sides.

It has 3 corners too.

Read it: Name a shape: count sides and corners

Count the sides. Count the corners. A shape with 3 sides and 3 corners is a triangle.

  1. Count the sides: 3.
  2. Count the corners: 3.
  3. 3 sides and 3 corners: it is a triangle.

A shape's sides and corners tell its name.

A tipped triangle still has 3 sides, so it is still a triangle.

A circle is round, so it has no sides to count.

Count the sides and the corners. They tell you the name.

Saying a tipped triangle is not a triangle.

Turn it in your head. It still has 3 sides and 3 corners.

Identify a triangle

Triangles are all around us — like the roof on top of a house!

Here is a triangle, all by itself. Let's see what makes it special.

Kindergarten · 3 sides, 3 corners

A triangle has straight sides. One...

...two...

...three sides!

And three pointy corners, too.

Triangles can point any way — up, down, or sideways. They're still triangles!

Big or small, if it has three straight sides, it's a triangle.

Three sides and three corners — that's a triangle!

Now you try. Count the corners on this shape. Type the corner count.
