A square has four equal sides.

All four corners are square.

Read it: Name a shape: count sides and corners

Count the sides. Count the corners. A shape with 3 sides and 3 corners is a triangle.

  1. Count the sides: 3.
  2. Count the corners: 3.
  3. 3 sides and 3 corners: it is a triangle.

A shape's sides and corners tell its name.

A tipped triangle still has 3 sides, so it is still a triangle.

A circle is round, so it has no sides to count.

Count the sides and the corners. They tell you the name.

Saying a tipped triangle is not a triangle.

Turn it in your head. It still has 3 sides and 3 corners.

How many sides does a square have? — 4. A square has 4 sides, all the same.

What makes a shape a square?

Here is a square. Let's see what makes it special.

Kindergarten · Spotting squares everywhere

A square has four straight sides. One...

...two...

...three...

...and four sides!

And all four sides are the same length.

A square also has four corners. One, two, three, four.

Even if we turn it on its side, it's still a square.

Four equal sides and four corners — that's a square!

Now you try. Choose this shape's name from the list. Which name fits?

What you see

While they climb, your page writes one true line to ask about tonight, and a short note each Sunday.
