50 is 5 tens.

A number times 50 is that number times 5 tens.

Read it: Count the groups of tens

You have 3 trays of chips. Each tray holds 4 tens. Look at those 12 chips — they are 12 tens, not 12 ones.

  1. See each 40 as 4 tens sitting in a tray.
  2. Multiply 3 trays by 4 tens to get 12 tens.
  3. Write those 12 tens as 120.

Counting all 120 from 1 works, but it is slow, and a skipped chip spoils the total.

Each tray holds the same 4 tens, so 3 trays are 3 equal groups rather than a pile of 120.

12 tens is 120 because each ten is worth 10, and 12 of them sit in the tens place.

When the groups hold tens, multiply the groups by the tens, then say what those tens are worth.

Multiplying 3 by 4 and writing 12, as if the 4 tens were 4 chips.

The 12 you get are tens, so 12 tens is 120.

2 × 30 = ___ — 60. 2 × 3 = 6, and 6 tens are 60.

4 × 50

What is four times fifty? Let's find a fast way to solve it.

Here's a fact that will help us: fifty is the same as five tens.

So four times fifty is the same as four times five, then times ten.

Let's start with the easy part. Four times five is twenty.

Now multiply by ten. Multiplying by ten just adds a zero, so twenty times ten is two hundred.

4 × 50 = ?50 = 5 × 104 × 50 = (4 × 5) × 104 × 5 = 2020 × 10 = 200Multiplying by 10 just adds a zero4 × 50 = 200Check it: 50 is half of 1004 × 100 = 400, half of 400 = 2004 × 50 = 200ANSWER2004 × 50
Grade 3 · Worked example: 4 × 50

So four times fifty equals two hundred.

Let's double-check with another trick. Fifty is also half of one hundred.

Four times one hundred is four hundred, and half of four hundred is two hundred.

Both ways agree — four times fifty is two hundred. Great work!
