How it is taught

0:00 of 3:04

Times 10 moves each digit one place left.

A zero fills the ones place.

Read it: Jumps of tens

5 × 10 = 50: 5 jumps of 10 from 0 land on 50: 10, 20, 30, 40, 50. Jumps of 90 work the same way: 2 jumps of 90 land on 180.

  1. Start at 0.
  2. Jump the same size each time.
  3. Count the jumps, then read where you land.

Each jump of 10 is 1 ten, so 5 jumps of 10 is 5 tens: 50.

3 × 10 = 30: 3 jumps of 10. And 2 × 90 = 180: 2 jumps of 90.

Bigger jumps work the same way: count the jumps, read the landing. 90 is 9 tens, so a jump of 90 is 9 tens at once.

The number of jumps times the size of a jump is where you land.

Adding instead of jumping: 5 and 10 make 15.

5 jumps of 10: 10, 20, 30, 40, 50. So 5 × 10 = 50.

7 × 10 = ___ — 70. 7 jumps of 10: 10, 20, 30, 40, 50, 60, 70. So 7 × 10 = 70.

3 × 10

Let's find 3 groups of 10. How many is that in all?

Here are 3 groups of ten, all lined up.

Let's count by tens: ten, twenty, thirty.

Grade 3 · Worked example: 3 × 10

There's a fast way too. Start with the number three.

Now put a zero right after it — every digit shifts one place to the left, and a zero fills the ones place.

So three times ten equals thirty.

Three times ten is thirty! This trick works for any number times ten.
