Times 3 means three equal groups.

The product is three of that number in all.

Read it: Skip count by fives

You have three trays. Five apples sit on each. Don't count all fifteen — look at the skip: five, ten, fifteen.

  1. See three trays with five apples on each.
  2. Skip count by fives: five, ten, fifteen.
  3. Say three times five is fifteen.

Counting every apple from one works, but fifteen apples take a long time, and you can lose a tray.

Each tray holds the same five apples, so after the first tray you already know the next jump is five more.

Three jumps of five land on fifteen, which is three trays of five without touching every apple.

When trays hold matching amounts, skip count the trays, not every apple.

Adding three and five and saying eight apples in all.

Three trays of five is not three plus five — skip five, ten, fifteen.

4 × 2 = ___ — 8. 4 trays with 2 apples in each: skip-count the trays — 2, 4, 6, 8.

4 × 3

How many are there in three equal groups of four?

Four times three means three equal groups, with four in each group.

Here are our three groups, side by side.

Group one, group two, group three — each group holds four.

We can add them together: four plus four plus four.

First, four plus four is eight.

Then eight plus four is twelve.
