A bar graph compares groups with bars.

Taller bars mean more.

Read it: Read it off the bars

You put 7 apples, 4 crackers and 5 ducks on the table. Asking how many more apples than crackers means counting twice. The bars already show it.

  1. Make a stack for each kind: 7 apples, 4 crackers, 5 ducks.
  2. Stand the stacks as bars so you can compare heights.
  3. Read apples 7 against crackers 4: they sit 3 apart.

Recounting the pile for each question works, but it is slow and easy to skip a counter.

A bar keeps the count in view, so you do not have to remember 7, 4 and 5 in your head.

How many more is the gap: from 4 up to 7 is 3, and the bars show that gap.

Stack each count into a bar, then read the answer from the heights.

Guessing from the pile, not the heights, and saying ducks have the most.

Look at how far each bar goes. Apples reach 7, and that is the most.

A bar graph has an apples bar at 3 and a crackers bar at 1. How many more apples than crackers? — 2. How many more is the gap between the 2 heights: from 1 up to 3 is 2.

Pet Survey

Mr. Lee asked his class which pet they have. Let's read the bar graph to find out!

Here is our bar graph. It shows three pets: dogs, cats, and birds.

Look at the dogs bar. Count the squares: one, two, three, four, five. Five children have dogs.

Now the cats bar. One, two, three. Three children have cats.

And the birds bar. One, two. Just two children have birds.

How many children in all? Let's add: five plus three plus two.

Five plus three is eight. Eight plus two is ten. Ten children in all!

Grade 1 · Reading a bar graph with three categories

How many more dogs than birds? Compare five dogs to two birds.

Five take away two is three. There are three more dogs than birds.

Nice work! Bar graphs let us see and compare numbers in one quick look.
