1/4 — one equal part out of four
Today we'll learn about unit fractions. Imagine a chocolate bar shared fairly between four friends.
We split the whole bar into four equal parts — one piece for each friend.
Let's count them together: one, two, three, four equal parts.
Now color in just one part — that's your piece of the bar.
How many equal parts is the whole bar split into?
Four! We write four on the bottom. The bottom number is called the denominator.
And how many of those parts did we shade?
Just one. We write one on top. The top number is called the numerator.
We read this fraction as one-fourth — one out of four equal parts.
When the top number is exactly one, we call it a unit fraction. It names one single equal part.
So one-fourth is a unit fraction: one equal part out of four. Nice work!
