A multiple is what you get when you multiply a number by a whole number.

If the one-digit number divides it evenly, it is a multiple.

Read it: Multiples are where jumps land

Jump by 4s from 0: 4, 8, 12, 16, 20, 24. Every number a jump lands on is a multiple of 4, and 24 = 6 × 4.

  1. Start at 0 and jump by the number, again and again.
  2. Every number you land on is a multiple of it.
  3. A number no jump lands on is not a multiple.

A multiple of 4 is 4 times a whole number, and each jump adds one more 4.

So the landings 4, 8 and 12 are the products 1 × 4, 2 × 4 and 3 × 4.

The next multiple is always one more jump.

The multiples of a number are where equal jumps of it land, starting at 0.

Calling 14 a multiple of 4 because it ends in 4.

Jumps of 4 land on 12 and 16, never on 14. 14 is not a multiple of 4.

What is the next multiple of 6 after 42? — 48. 42 + 6 = 48: one more jump of 6.

Is 24 a multiple of 6?

A multiple of six is any number we get when we count by sixes. Let's check — is twenty-four a multiple of six?

Here's a number line. We'll skip-count by sixes from zero and see if we land on twenty-four.

Six.

Twelve.

Eighteen.

Twenty-four! We landed right on it.

Grade 4 · Skip-count and check with division

Let's double-check with division. What is twenty-four divided by six?

Exactly four, with zero left over.

When a one-digit number divides evenly — no remainder — the bigger number is one of its multiples.

So yes! Twenty-four is a multiple of six, because six times four equals twenty-four.
