How it is taught

Bills use a dollar sign in front of the amount.

One hundred cents make one dollar.

Read it: Count bills: biggest first

1 $10 bill, 2 $5 bills and 3 $1 bills. That is 6 bills, but it is $23.

  1. Start with the biggest bill: $10.
  2. Count on by fives: $15, $20.
  3. Count on by ones: $21, $22, $23.

Each bill is worth the number printed on it, not just 1.

Counting the biggest bills first makes the biggest jumps come first.

Then each smaller bill adds less, so the count ends at the total: $23.

Start with the biggest bill. Count on by what each bill is worth.

Saying 6, the number of bills, for how much money there is.

Count what each is worth: $10, $15, $20, $21, $22, $23.

Ravi has 2 $10 bills and 1 $5 bill. How many dollars is that? — 25. Start with the biggest: $10, $20, then $25.

$10 + $5 = $15.00

Today we'll learn how to name dollar bills and write money amounts.

Here's a key idea — one hundred cents is the same as one dollar.

These are the bills we use most: one, five, ten, and twenty dollars.

Grade 2 · Naming bills and writing dollar amounts

This is the one-dollar bill — it's worth just one dollar.

This is the five-dollar bill — it's worth five dollars.

This is the ten-dollar bill — it's worth ten dollars.

And this is the twenty-dollar bill — it's worth twenty dollars.

Sam has one ten-dollar bill and one five-dollar bill. How much money does he have?

Ten plus five equals fifteen.

We use the dollar symbol — this curly S — to show it's money. Write a dollar sign, then fifteen.

We can also write it with a decimal point and two zeros for the cents.

Sam has fifteen dollars — written dollar sign one five point zero zero. Nice work!
