Write Three-Digit Numbers in Expanded Form

Students will write any three-digit number in expanded form by breaking it into the value of each digit (e.g., 536 = 500 + 30 + 6). They will also reconstruct a number from its expanded form.

Each digit has a place value.

Expanded form writes those values as a sum.

Read it: Expanded form: what each place is worth

645 in a chart: 6 chips of 100 make 600, 4 chips of 10 make 40, and 5 chips of 1 make 5. So 645 = 600 + 40 + 5.

  1. Count the chips in each column: 6, 4 and 5.
  2. Write what each place is worth: 600, 40 and 5.
  3. Add the values: 600 + 40 + 5 = 645.

A chip shows its place's value: 100, 10 or 1.

6 chips of 100 are 600, not 6.

An empty place adds nothing: 305 = 300 + 5.

Expanded form adds what each place is worth: hundreds + tens + ones.

Writing 6 + 4 + 5 for 645.

Each digit is worth its place: 600 + 40 + 5.

700 + 90 + 4 = ___ — 794. Each place adds its value: 794.

536 = 500 + 30 + 6

Today we'll write three-digit numbers in expanded form. Let's try the number five hundred thirty-six.

Here it is: 536. It has three digits, and each digit lives in its own place.

From left to right, the places are hundreds, tens, and ones.

Look at the first digit, the five. It sits in the hundreds place.

So the five is really worth five hundred.

Next, the three. It sits in the tens place.

So the three is really worth thirty.

Last, the six. It sits in the ones place, so it's worth just six.

Let's expand 536Expanded Form536hundredstensones500+30+6536 = 500 + 30 + 6536 = 500 + 30 + 6EXPANDED500+30+6= 536
Grade 2 · Breaking a number into the value of each digit

Now we add the values together with plus signs: five hundred plus thirty plus six.

That's expanded form! 536 equals 500 plus 30 plus 6. You broke the number into its place values!
