Write an Equation to Show Whether a Number is Odd or Even

Students will express whether a number (up to 20) is even or odd by writing an equation. For even numbers, they write the number as a sum of two equal addends (e.g., 12 = 6 + 6). For odd numbers, they show the closest equal pair plus one (e.g., 11 = 5 + 5 + 1).

12 rungs. A star at the top.

Bea counts 6 ducks at the pond. Half swim left and half swim right. How many swim left?

An even number splits into two equal addends.

An odd number has one left after pairing.

Read it: Odd or even? Make pairs

Put 11 counters in pairs: 1 on top, 1 below. 5 pairs, and 1 counter has no partner. So 11 is odd.

  1. Put the counters in pairs.
  2. Count the pairs.
  3. No counter left over: even. 1 left over: odd.

An even number is a double: 10 = 5 + 5.

An odd number is a double and 1 more: 11 = 5 + 5 + 1.

Every even number splits into 2 equal rows.

Pair them up. All paired is even. 1 left over is odd.

Calling 11 even because 5 + 5 = 10 is close.

11 = 5 + 5 + 1. 1 is left over, so 11 is odd.

16 counters paired up make ___ pairs — 8. 16 = 8 + 8: 8 pairs, and every counter has a partner, so 16 is even.

12 = 6 + 6

Let's figure out if twelve is even or odd. We'll do it by pairing up.

Here is our number: twelve.

Picture twelve dots. We'll split them into two equal rows.

The top row has six dots.

The bottom row also has six dots — the same number!

Two equal groups means the number is even. Twelve equals...

...six...

...plus six.

Grade 2 · Pair up to show that 12 is even

Twelve equals six plus six, so twelve is even. Nice work!
