Draw a Scaled Bar Graph

Students will construct scaled bar graphs from provided data sets with several categories. They will choose an appropriate scale for the axis, accurately draw bars to the correct height, and label all parts of the graph including title, axis labels, and category names.

A bar graph compares amounts with bars of the same width.

The scale tells how high each bar goes.

Read it: Read a bar graph with a scale

On this graph each grid line counts 10 birds. Jays' bar stops halfway between 20 and 30, so Jays is 25.

  1. Find what each grid line counts: here, 10.
  2. Follow the top of a bar across to the scale and count up by 10s.
  3. A bar that stops halfway between two lines is half of 10 more: 20 and 5 make 25.

A scale that counts by 10s fits big numbers on a short graph: 60 birds is only 6 grid lines.

Every grid line counts the same, so a taller bar still means more.

To draw a bar, count up by the scale's number and stop at the line for that number: Robins' bar stops at 40.

Count up the scale by its number, not by ones, to read or draw a bar.

Counting the grid lines by ones: Robins' bar is 4 lines tall, so 4 birds.

Each line counts 10 birds: 10, 20, 30, 40. Robins is 40.

A graph's scale counts by 2s. How many grid lines tall is the bar for 14? — 7. 2, 4, 6, 8, 10, 12, 14: 7 grid lines of 2.

Pets in our class — scale of 2

Our class voted on favorite pets. Eight kids picked dogs, six picked cats, four picked fish, and two picked birds. Let's turn this into a bar graph!

First, we draw two lines — one going up, one going across. These are our axes.

The side going up will show how many students chose each pet.

Along the bottom, we write each kind of pet — dogs, cats, fish, birds.

Our biggest count is eight, so let's skip-count by twos. Each step on our scale stands for two students.

Mark zero, two, four, six, and eight up the side.

Eight kids picked dogs, so the dogs bar goes all the way up to eight.

Six picked cats. The cats bar stops at six.

Four picked fish, so the fish bar goes up to four.

And two picked birds — that bar only reaches two.

Last step — give our graph a title so everyone knows what it shows.

We made a scaled bar graph! Each square stands for two students. Nice work!
