Dividing by ten asks how many tens fit.

Check by multiplying the quotient by ten.

Read it: Equal jumps for times and divide

6 × 4 = 24: 6 jumps of 4 from 0 land on 24: 4, 8, 12, 16, 20, 24. And 24 ÷ 4 = 6: it takes 6 jumps of 4 to reach 24.

  1. Start at 0.
  2. Jump the same size each time.
  3. For ×, count the jumps and read where you land. For ÷, count how many jumps reach the number.

Each jump is one group, so 6 jumps of 4 is 6 groups of 4.

Times and divide use the same jumps: 6 × 4 = 24 and 24 ÷ 4 = 6.

A line holds big facts that are too many to draw one by one.

Equal jumps from 0: the number of jumps times the size of a jump is where you land.

Counting the ticks instead of the jumps.

Count the jumps: from 0 to 24 is 6 jumps of 4.

100 ÷ 10 = ___ — 10. 10 jumps of 10 land on 100, so 100 ÷ 10 = 10.

70 ÷ 10

Here's a division problem: seventy divided by ten. That means, how many groups of ten fit inside seventy?

Division and multiplication are opposite actions — dividing by ten uses the very same facts as multiplying by ten.

Let's picture seventy on a number line, starting at zero.

If we count up by tens, we land on ten, twenty, thirty, all the way to seventy. That's seven equal jumps.

So we can write it as an equation: seventy divided by ten equals what?

Remember, seven times ten equals seventy.

Grade 3 · Worked example: 70 ÷ 10

Since seven groups of ten make seventy, seventy divided by ten equals seven.

Seventy divided by ten is seven. Whenever you know a times-ten fact, you already know the matching divide-by-ten fact!
