Use >, =, and < Symbols to Record Comparisons of Three-Digit Numbers

Students will use the symbols >, =, and < to record comparisons between two three-digit numbers. They will correctly orient the symbol so that it opens toward the greater number and read comparisons aloud using 'greater than,' 'equal to,' and 'less than.'

Which comparison is written correctly?

The open end of the symbol faces the greater number.

Read the numbers from left to right.

Read it: Hundreds first

528 or 582? Put both in a place table. The hundreds are the same: 5 and 5. The tens decide: 8 tens beat 2 tens. So 582 > 528.

  1. Line up the hundreds, the tens and the ones.
  2. Start at the hundreds. Find the first place that is different.
  3. That place decides. More there means greater.

1 hundred is more than 9 tens and 9 ones, so the hundreds count first.

A place that is the same does not decide. Look at the next place.

The sign opens toward the greater number: 582 > 528.

Compare from the left: hundreds, then tens, then ones. The first place that is different decides.

Choosing 297 over 312, because 9 tens is more than 1 ten.

The hundreds decide first: 3 hundreds beat 2 hundreds, so 312 > 297.

739 ___ 793 — <. The hundreds are the same, so the tens decide: 739 < 793.

472 vs 425

Let's compare two numbers: four hundred seventy-two, and four hundred twenty-five. Which one is greater?

We line them up by place value — hundreds, tens, and ones.

Start with the hundreds. Four hundreds and four hundreds — they're the same!

Grade 2 · Using >, =, and < to compare numbers

When the hundreds tie, look at the tens. Seven tens versus two tens.

Seven tens is more than two tens, so four hundred seventy-two is the bigger number.

Now we record it. The greater-than symbol is like a hungry alligator — its open mouth always points to the BIGGER number.

So we open the mouth toward four-seventy-two and write the symbol between the numbers.

We read it out loud: four hundred seventy-two is greater than four hundred twenty-five.

Compare hundreds first, then tens, then ones — and point the alligator's mouth at the bigger number!
