Compare Absolute Value and Order

Students distinguish between comparing numbers by their value and comparing their absolute values. They apply this distinction to real-world contexts, such as comparing temperatures below zero or amounts of debt, recognizing that a smaller (more negative) number may have a larger absolute value.

Absolute value is distance from zero.

A number farther left can have a larger distance.

−15−10−5051015E

Read it: Which side of 0, how far

On a line with 0 in the middle, −6 is 6 steps left of 0 and −1 is 1 step left. So −6 < −1, though −6 is farther from 0.

  1. Find 0. A negative number sits to its left, a positive number to its right.
  2. Count the steps from 0 to the mark: that is its distance, its absolute value.
  3. To compare two numbers, read the line from left to right: the one farther left is less.

−6 and 6 are both 6 steps from 0, on opposite sides, so |−6| = |6| = 6.

A distance is never negative, so |−6| is 6, not −6.

Each step to the right adds 1, so −1 is greater than −6, and 0 is greater than both.

The sign says which side of 0 a number is on, the absolute value says how far, and farther left is less.

Calling −6 greater than −1, because 6 is greater than 1.

On the line −6 is farther left, so −6 < −1, even though |−6| > |−1|.

Which is greater, |−15| or |12|? — |−15|. |−15| = 15 and |12| = 12, so |−15| is greater: −15 is farther from 0.

Compare 15 and −20

A hiker stands fifteen feet above sea level. A diver swims twenty feet below. Where do they land on a number line?

Here's our number line. Zero is sea level. Up is positive, down is negative.

The hiker is at positive fifteen — to the right of zero.

The diver is at negative twenty — to the left of zero.

Which number is greater? On a number line, the one farther to the right is always greater.

Fifteen is greater than negative twenty. So the hiker is at the higher position.

But who is farther from sea level? That's a different question — it's about distance from zero.

The absolute value of fifteen is fifteen. The hiker is fifteen feet from sea level.

The absolute value of negative twenty is twenty. The diver is twenty feet from sea level.

Twenty is greater than fifteen. So the diver is actually farther from sea level than the hiker.

Negative twenty is less than fifteen — but its absolute value is bigger. Order and distance from zero are two different ideas!
