Classify Quadrilaterals

Students will sort and classify quadrilaterals — including squares, rectangles, rhombuses, parallelograms, and trapezoids — based on their attributes. They will explain their reasoning using attribute language and create or complete Venn diagrams to show relationships.

Read it: Rectangles by their corners

5 shapes sit on the table. Which of them are rectangles? Read the marks, not the look.

  1. A rectangle has 4 square corners.
  2. Find the shapes with a square mark in every corner.
  3. The rectangle and the square: 2 rectangles.

The marks on a shape tell what is true about its sides and corners.

A square has 4 square corners, so it is a rectangle too.

A parallelogram has 2 pairs of parallel sides, so it is a trapezoid too.

Name a shape by its marks. 1 shape can have 2 names.

Leaving out the square, because it is not long like a rectangle.

Check its corners: 4 square corners. The square is a rectangle too.

A shape has 2 pairs of parallel sides and 4 equal sides, but no square corners. What is its most exact name? — rhombus. 4 equal sides make it a rhombus. With no square corners, it is not a square.

Classify a quadrilateral by its attributes

Let's classify a mystery shape using its attributes.

Here's our shape. What can we notice about it?

Grade 3 · Use sides and angles to name a shape

Let's count the sides: one, two, three, four. Four sides means it's a quadrilateral.

Both pairs of opposite sides are parallel — that makes it a parallelogram.

Look closer — all four sides are the same length.

Do the corners look like square corners? Not quite — these aren't right angles.

Four equal sides, opposite sides parallel, but no right angles — that's a rhombus!

Now you try. Pick the name that matches this shape. Which name matches?
