Which tool is best for measuring the length of a classroom?

How it is taught

0:00 of 3:06

Different tools fit different lengths.

A book in inches fits a short rigid tool.

Read it: Pick a tool that fits

A door is long. A ruler is 12 inches. A yardstick is 36 inches, as long as 3 rulers.

  1. Think: is the thing short or long?
  2. Short thing: pick a ruler.
  3. Long thing: pick a yardstick or a meter stick.

A long tool covers a long thing in a few moves.

Each move is a place to slip.

A short tool fits a short thing in one go.

Short things: a ruler. Long things: a yardstick or a meter stick.

Picking a ruler for a door.

A door is long. A yardstick fits it in fewer moves.

Which tool fits a bed: a ruler or a yardstick? — a yardstick. A bed is long, so a yardstick measures it with fewer moves.

Crayon, desk, classroom — which tool fits?

Some things we measure are tiny. Some are huge. The right tool depends on the size!

A ruler is short — about twelve inches. It's perfect for small things.

A yardstick is longer — three feet long. Good for medium things.

A measuring tape is the longest. It rolls out to measure really big things.

First, a crayon. It's just a few inches long.

The ruler is just the right size. Use the ruler!

Grade 2 · Match the tool to the size of the thing you're measuring

Next, a desk. A desk is a few feet across — way too long for a ruler.

The yardstick fits. Use the yardstick!

Last, a whole classroom! That's many, many feet long.

Only the measuring tape is long enough. Use the tape!

Match the tool to the size: small thing, ruler. Big thing, tape. Nice work!
