Adding joins two groups.

The sum is how many.

Read it: Adding by counting on

You have 4 crackers. Your brother gives you 3 more. You could count them all again from 1, but you already know the first plate is 4.

  1. Say the number you already know: 4.
  2. Count on, 1 number for each new cracker: 5, 6, 7.
  3. The last number you say is the total: 4 + 3 = 7.

Counting all from 1 works, but it is slow, and it gets slower as the numbers grow.

Counting on starts from a number you already trust, so there is less to count and less to lose track of.

Start from the bigger number: for 3 + 4, say 4, then count on 5, 6, 7.

To add, start at the bigger number and count on the other one.

Saying the starting number as the first count: "4, 5, 6" for 4 + 3, and answering 6.

The starting number is what you already have. The counting begins with the first new cracker: 5.

6 + 2 = ___ — 8. Start at 6 — the number you already know — and count on 2: 7, 8.

6 + 3

Today we'll add numbers within ten. Imagine you have six red apples.

Here are our six apples. Let's count them: one, two, three, four, five, six.

Now a friend gives you three more green apples.

How many apples do we have in all? Let's write it as six plus three.

We start at six because we already have six apples.

Count on one more: seven.

Count on again: eight.

And one more: nine.

Kindergarten · Counting on to find the sum

We landed on nine. So six plus three equals nine.

Six plus three is nine. You added within ten. Great job!
