Add a Two-Digit and a One-Digit Number without Regrouping

Students add a two-digit number and a one-digit number when the sum of the ones digits is 9 or less, so no regrouping is needed (e.g., 43 + 5 = 48).

If ones stay under ten, no trade.

The tens digit stays the same.

Read it: Add ones to a 2-digit number

36 + 7. 36 is 3 tens and 6 ones. 6 and 7 make 13 ones, and 10 of them make a new ten: 4 tens and 3 ones, 43.

  1. Split the number into tens and ones: 3 tens and 6 ones.
  2. Add the ones: 6 and 7 make 13 ones.
  3. 10 ones make a new ten: 4 tens and 3 ones, 43.

Only the ones are added, so the tens stay until the ones reach 10.

10 ones are the same as 1 ten, so they are bundled.

When the ones stay under 10, the tens do not change: 52 + 4 = 56.

Add the ones. 10 ones make a new ten.

Writing 313 for 3 tens and 13 ones.

13 ones is 1 ten and 3 ones: 4 tens and 3 ones, 43.

72 + 5 = ___ — 77. The tens stay. 2 and 5 make 7 ones: 77.

43 + 5

Imagine you have forty-three stickers. A friend gives you five more. How many do you have now?

Let's hop along a number line. Here are the numbers from forty to fifty.

We start at forty-three — that's how many stickers we had to begin with.

Now we jump five steps forward, one for each new sticker.

We land on forty-eight!

We can also stack the numbers. Line up the ones with the ones.

Always start with the ones column on the right.

What is three plus five?

Eight! Write eight in the ones place.

There's nothing to add to the tens, so the four just stays right where it is.
